Make the best creamy French onion dip using caramelized onions instead of a mix. This easy appetizer is perfect for game days and parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, for faster caramelization)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream (full fat recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 45 minutes until they are deeply browned and sweet. Reduce heat if they start to burn. Add Worcestershire sauce and sugar (if using) during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  3. Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let them cool completely. You can speed this up by placing the skillet in an ice bath or refrigerating them.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until smooth.
  5. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture until evenly distributed.
  6. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. This step is key for the best flavor.
  7. Before serving, taste and adjust salt or pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chives. Serve cold with chips, crackers, or vegetables.

Notes

  • For a quicker dip, skip caramelizing the onions and use 1 packet of dry onion soup mix instead, blending it with the dairy base.
  • If you want a slightly tangier dip, substitute half of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead.
