Make a balanced, classic Bourbon Old Fashioned cocktail. This recipe focuses on quality bourbon for a sophisticated drink perfect for celebrations like Father’s Day or National Bourbon Day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz quality bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube or 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash water (optional)
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Large ice cube or sphere

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar cube in an old fashioned glass.
  2. Add the bitters and the dash of water (if using) over the sugar.
  3. Muddle the sugar and bitters together until the sugar dissolves into a paste.
  4. Add the bourbon to the glass.
  5. Add the large ice cube.
  6. Stir the mixture gently for about 30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the drink.
  7. Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink by twisting it, then drop the peel into the glass as a garnish.

Notes

  • Use a high-proof bourbon for a stronger flavor profile.
  • If you prefer a sweeter drink, use two sugar cubes.
  • Stirring time affects dilution; stir less for a stronger drink.
