Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • Zest of 2 large oranges
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • For the Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar
  • For the Glaze: 1/4 cup fresh orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan or two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup orange juice and orange zest.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour the batter into your prepared pan(s).
  8. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes for a tube pan, or 30 to 35 minutes for round pans, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Prepare the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar and 1/4 cup orange juice until smooth. Add more powdered sugar or juice as needed to reach a thick but pourable consistency.
  11. Drizzle the sweet orange glaze over the cooled cake. Allow the glaze to set before slicing and serving this classic Southern orange cake recipe.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use fresh oranges for both the zest and the juice.
  • If you are making this as a loaf cake, reduce the baking time slightly and check for doneness sooner.
  • This cake freezes well before glazing. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil.
