Make perfectly crispy sweet potato fries in the oven. This easy recipe uses simple techniques to achieve a crunchy exterior and tender center, making them a healthy alternative to deep-fried snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large sweet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/4-inch thick sticks
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Soak the sweet potato sticks in a large bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. This removes excess starch and helps them crisp. Drain completely and pat them very dry with paper towels. This step is critical for crispiness.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a large baking sheet in the oven while it preheats. A hot pan helps start the crisping process immediately.
  3. In a clean, dry bowl, toss the dried sweet potato sticks with the cornstarch until lightly coated.
  4. Drizzle the sweet potatoes with olive oil and toss again to coat evenly.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle this seasoning mix over the potatoes and toss one final time.
  6. Carefully remove the hot baking sheet from the oven. Arrange the sweet potato fries on the hot sheet in a single layer, ensuring they do not touch. Do not overcrowd the pan; use two sheets if necessary.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes. Flip the fries.
  8. Return to the oven and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and crisp.
  9. Serve immediately as a quick side dish or healthy snack.

Notes

  • For the best results, ensure the sweet potatoes are completely dry before adding cornstarch.
  • Do not skip preheating the baking sheet; the initial heat contact promotes crispness.
  • If you prefer an air fryer method, cook at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.
