Make this French Onion Chicken Bake for a comforting dinner. This recipe uses simple ingredients to deliver the rich, savory flavor of French Onion Soup over tender chicken breasts, topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Provolone)
  • 2 tablespoons crispy fried onions (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized and soft. Stir in the dried thyme, salt, and pepper during the last minute of cooking. Remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup, French onion soup, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. This is your savory sauce base.
  4. Place the chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish or the same skillet if it is oven-safe. Pour the soup mixture evenly over the chicken.
  5. Top the chicken evenly with the caramelized onions.
  6. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. Remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese over the chicken. Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. If using, sprinkle with crispy fried onions before serving.

Notes

  • For a one pan French onion chicken skillet method, use an oven-safe skillet for the entire process, starting with caramelizing the onions directly in the pan.
  • If you do not have Gruyère, Provolone or Swiss cheese works well for the cheesy chicken topping.
  • Serve this hearty chicken meal over egg noodles or rice to soak up the savory sauce.
