Create bakery-style cheese danishes with store-bought puff pastry. These flaky pastries feature a creamy cheese filling and are ready in about 30 minutes, perfect for brunch or a coffee break.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Optional: fruit preserves, powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Cut it into four equal squares.
  4. Score a 1/2-inch border around the inside edge of each square using a knife, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  5. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture evenly within the scored border of each pastry square. If using, spoon a small amount of fruit preserves over the cream cheese.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and milk to create an egg wash. Brush the exposed puff pastry border with the egg wash.
  7. Place the danishes on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Let the danishes cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, before serving.

Notes

  • For a make-ahead option, prepare the cream cheese filling and thaw the puff pastry the night before. Assemble and bake just before serving.
  • You can substitute other flavor extracts like almond or lemon for the vanilla.
  • Add fresh berries or a drizzle of glaze after baking for extra flavor.
