Make velvety, hands-off mashed potatoes in your slow cooker. This recipe avoids boiling and draining, delivering rich, buttery, and fluffy potatoes perfect for holidays or weeknight dinners.

  • 4 lbs Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened and cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 2 cloves roasted garlic, mashed (optional, but recommended)

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and quartered potatoes into the basin of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker.
  2. Pour the chicken broth or water over the potatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  3. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the potatoes are completely tender when pierced with a fork.
  4. Drain off any excess liquid remaining in the slow cooker.
  5. Add the butter, softened cream cheese, heavy cream, and mashed roasted garlic (if using) to the potatoes.
  6. Use a potato masher directly in the slow cooker to mash the potatoes until they reach your desired consistency. Mash until smooth for the creamiest texture.
  7. Stir everything together until the butter and cream cheese are fully melted and incorporated, creating a rich, uniform mixture.
  8. Keep the slow cooker on the WARM setting until you are ready to serve. Stir occasionally.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, use room temperature cream cheese and heavy cream.
  • If you prefer a tangier flavor instead of cream cheese, substitute it with 8 ounces of full-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt, adding it at the end with the cream.
  • This recipe is excellent for make ahead mashed potatoes crock pot use; keep warm for up to 2 hours before serving.
  • To save time, use pre-minced jarred garlic instead of roasting fresh garlic.
