Make rich, creamy white hot chocolate at home using simple ingredients. This decadent drink is perfect for cozy winter nights and comes together quickly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 6 ounces high-quality white chocolate, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup heavy cream for extra richness

Instructions

  1. Pour the milk into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat the milk until it is steaming but not boiling.
  2. Reduce the heat to low. Add the chopped white chocolate to the warm milk.
  3. Whisk constantly until the white chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Do not let the mixture boil, as this can cause the chocolate to seize or scorch.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. If using, whisk in the heavy cream now for a richer texture.
  5. Continue to heat gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the drink is hot throughout.
  6. Pour the white hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream and marshmallows before serving immediately.

Notes

  • Use good quality white chocolate bars or chips for the best flavor and smoothest melt. Avoid using white baking chips that contain vegetable fats.
  • For a Starbucks copycat version, add 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract along with the vanilla.
  • To make this a quick white hot chocolate, use finely chopped chocolate or white chocolate melting wafers, which dissolve faster.
